It might take lots of bobber watching or a few cast and retrieve/swing presentations to hook up on a post spawn brown or staging steelhead. Then it was east most of Saturday, which did not help. So with light angling pressure in the Oak, a few drop backs, spawners and fresh fish have been encountered in the low and clear flows. Fishing pressure is over-the-all pretty light and manageable. Either way waiting for the mythical lower and clearer conditions for steelhead action may lead to lost chances. Lots of anglers anxious to get out there, and a few are, but the Kings are pretty much following a normal script as far as timing. The additional releases from the Erie Canal are triggering early Browns! Early season Oak rivermouth action for a nice brace of med female Kings for the Licorice Man. The creek at Olcott (18 Mile) is muddy but there are loads of fish around according to Karen Evarts at The Boat Doctors in Olcott. Then forecast is cooler again in the 40s for the upcoming weekend. When flows are reduced, guys are seeing a handful of browns and a few more steelhead nearer the dam. Best spoon is a gold laser spook. Trolling in a west direction was tough as the current was making it difficult. Parking will not be allowed at anytime on the road at the top of the driveway and therefore no walk in access down the driveway. The other area smaller tribs I have not laid eyes on directly and should have something like medium flows. Suckers here and there will entertain you, depending upon your pouty lips perspective and more and more bass will be in the mix too. Labor Day is when the big Lake Ontario Counties Fall Trout and Salmon Derby will be ending at 1 p.m. Temps are cooler here then points south and more rain or showers are expected at least thru tomorrow. Temperatures have finally started dropping with cooler weather setting in. Both inshore structure, mid water and offshore has a mixed bag catch available. Their Catch of Kings ranged from 16 to 22 lbs. Expect water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations especially as leaf fall is likely to accelerate soon. The other area smaller tribs look mostly open again with mod to med flows and slightly stained water color. This is in some contrast to earlier reports of mostly Kings kicking around on the lowering flows. Flows in the Oak, and really all around, are looking pretty good by winter time steelhead standards. Canal water flow managers are likely throttling back any additional Canal releases into the tribs thanks to all the precipitation. With the river water at 75+ degrees salmon wont be heading up in big numbers but there are always a few of the early runners. The green water is ideal but you can often have action in dirtier water then you think. Sandy Creek has been the most consistent brown trout action so thats where most of the fishing pressure has been. On the backside now of higher flows from about a week ago something like med to slightly high flows in the Oak and med in the smaller area waterways. After a few decent runs, the fish was starting to cooperate That was until it got to the back of the boat. Cover lots of water and get the drift down and slow and you could find a chromer! We are hearing of a few more browns now in the Oak, especially thru yesterday. Keep informed from the NYS Canal web for changes and restrictions with canal waters. We are generally most confident in our Oak interpretations, less so in the other area smaller tribs. Water color is real nice at slightly stained 2 ft of visibility so drift chances for now are the best theyve been so far this late winter/early spring period. Releases may change due to weather and other conditions. A good day might be a couple of hookups with a steelhead thrown in. Not surprising since it was a real gloomy overcast wet kind of day that you would expect good fish movement. Wow! But the fish like stability and not surprises. The Port Bay pier (small) is at the end of West Port Bay Road and the Sodus Bay pier (long) are places to cast out heavy spoons. Fishing pressure is light all around and no significant icing conditions are hindering drifting chances. According to Capt. The Wolcott Creek off Furnace Road had some late season kings. So for now the drifting and swinging conditions look pretty good. One note: the spiny water flea bloom is in progress so rig your rods with 30-50# mono on riggers and be prepared to check rods often. So if youre following this the moral of the story is that the weather is up and down and therefore so are the water levels and fishable conditions. On the Oak guys are getting brown trout hook ups each day with that action seeming to heat up as the fresh salmon action begins to cool down. Its a difficult forecast to predict what may happen to trib conditions but any over-the-all colder temps that will come along with the icing or snow should continue the dropping and clearing trend in the waterways to mod in the Oak and low in the smaller waterways. Think something like flows going from low to not so low. Divers: Seneca Special with the Atomic big fin glow behind it (a standard he runs this time of year). Flows consist of lots of turbine water and overflow water that started to come back up for the end of the past weekend. Thanks, Capt. Anglers on the Oak reported small pods of Kings on the move thru the fast water areas yesterday. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. That could push more fish into the river plume and into the channel. Overflow levels are diminished. Try to anticipate dropping and clearing flows and be on the water when reasonable conditions come together! The hope is this cold weather will be a good thing for later winter and spring steelhead action. The rain thru the end of the past weekend was not enough to cause any great change in trib flows. After the extremely high water we have had the last two weeks it is finally receded enough to produce safer wading conditions. A few good browns reported to be hooked up yesterday on the Oak. Not sure yet how much of a change in flows in the Oak well see, but with the precip received so far it shouldnt be bad enough for a blow out. Hours are 7 am till 5pm. After unseasonably warm temps thru yesterday and wind, the forecast thru this end part of the week is cooler with rain or showers tonight going over to snow showers tomorrow. Through the past weekend and beginning part of this week, guys reported a few hook-ups by either working the holes, the dam, or swinging spawning staging spots. Likewise find Kings steaming up the Oak too with good slightly stained flows all around. Water flows and trout and salmon migrations are looking good thanks to bolstered Erie Canal feed to the Oak and other waterways. To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. Some reports of stained water color to the east which could be a result of Canal drainage. Blown flows typically come from the overflow channel. Steelhead should be spread thru the waterways and reports of a few fresh, silver browns too. Hopefully the fishing pressure overall is likewise spread out like the fish. Lots of young browns bodes well for future trib fish and this bigger rutted out fish begs the question where were you last fall?! Seasonable temps for the end of week and chance for a quick significant warmup with rain again around the end of the upcoming weekend. Flows in the Oak were higher yesterday but expecting that to retreat again toward medium and slightly stained. Cormorant numbers, however, remain a significant challenge to all the Lake wide salmonid stocking efforts. FREE boat launching until the Spring! Expect water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations and whats been a delayed leaf fall. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Johnson Creek had a nice bump in flows and got stained and guys reported some salmon on the move there. So no big change in flows yet in the Oak. Oak Orchard Oct 2020. Even without any significant new precipitation, look for flows in the Oak to stay up thanks to strong swamp headwater supplies. King numbers are slowly building in fast water areas on the Oak, besides whats been good numbers at the dam and the downstream frog water areas. Amazing how when the vegetation awakens and the runoff equation changes. Flows in the Oak are restored thru the turbine channel. Fishing out deep has been hit and miss and no real pattern of lures to speak of. Angler reports indicate that fishing quality was down during parts of this year in some Lake Ontario tributaries, including Oak . On the dates not included above anglers can still fish any of the water adjacent to the Archers Club but access will have to be by walking and wading from downstream at the Park Ave Ext Fishing Trail or from upstream at the Waterport dam and anglers cannot be on the Archers Club grounds only in the immediate bankside water. All the trib flows look on the retreat from previous snowmelt and precipitation. Best bass spots are downriver around Joseph Davis State Park and Youngstown near Fort Niagara. Other area smaller tribs are at med and slightly stained. We had our bites but we could not get them to stick. May 21st is the scheduling for the canal opening. There seems to be a stalemate between the open Lake temps and the trib water temps thanks to the relatively mild winter. Dont wait for Apr and ask if the steelhead are in yet! Look for good drift opportunities on the backside of the higher flows with the chance for fresh trout migrations and Kings to be well spread thru the water courses. To the west at Johnson Creek, flows are medium and mostly clear with reports of some brown trout hookups. Since then, the Douglaston Salmon Run has reported salmon entering the river on a consistent basis. No major chill down seen in the near term forecast and there is some rain or showers going over to snow showers forecast for Thursday and Friday. Flows in the other area smaller tribs should be around med and slightly stained. With fair to good bolstered flows from the Erie Canal guys are reporting good brown trout action with a green King here and there and/or a sporty colorful coho. Water visibility was about 6-foot at the time. The following report is courtesy of Capt. Coldish days in the low 30s F and 20s at night look to be dropping trib flows to the east at Sandy quicker then flows to the west at Johnson. Flows in the Oak are clearing slowly and hanging in somewhere between med and slightly high. Water color was stained with probably greater then a foot but less then 2 feet of viz. The large catfish are biting in Clyde and Palmyra. Any rainfall is really going to get things cranking and water color this time is likely to get dirty. Registration is only open for KOTO at Ernsts Lake Breeze Marina. Good chance of rain on Thursday carrying over with gloom on Friday and possibility of 0.5 1 inch of precipitation. Other area smaller tribs are at moderate to medium and slightly stained flows. Shouldnt be any serious icing in yet but there could be some bank ice or chunky flows. As a few post holiday reports come in it sounds like guys have had some better steelhead action. Temps are on the mild side, dropping down some at night and thru today and over the next part of the week we are getting some melt off which should be good for maintenance. A nice mid week weather period now after the holiday weekend with clear and warm days forecast today and tomorrow. There was another couple inches of wet snow and something like a 0.25 inch of rain thru last night. Some Northern pike can be caught in the harbor, too. Flows in the Oak are about medium and slightly stained with about 2 ft of visibility. Ernie Calandrelli has been slapping the eyes with harnesses. Guys thru yesterday higher up scored a few hook ups on eggs or beads on fresh steelhead while downstream swingers had a tougher go. All weigh-ins will be at the Black North Inn by 3 PM.
